Final Project

This blog is about my final project for my ETC course. I had to create a relevant and innovative learning scenario (RILS). This RILS includes the use of a web 2.0 tool to allow students to use to produce a final product or complete the task at hand. I chose to use a web 2.0 site called kido'z to allow students to use as a web browser that I can control what sites the students have access to. The use of this site will allow me to maintain time and production control during class time.
I have also include a persuasive video to communicate the purpose and success of my RILS.

Lesson: 50 States                                             By: Dranèy Melville
Target Audience – 5th grade geography
In this scenario students become “historians” as they conduct research about state facts.
Materials – Poster Board with 50 states listed by its region, computer with Internet access, Poster board for each student, printer, scissors, glue, markers, notebook paper, pencils/pens
Objectives – Students will identify state facts about eight states. Students will design a poster containing state facts. Students will reflect on their learning process.
Procedure
1.    Teacher will assign each student with two states in the same region.
2.    Each student will locate the region of their state on the master poster and move to the station that includes their region.
3.    Teacher will assign each student with a number from 1-6 in each station depending on the number of students in the class.
4.    Regions 2 and 3 will remain stationary for a period of 5 minutes while station 1 rotates to 3 and 4 rotates to 2.
5.    Students will pair up with their matching number they were assigned and write down the name of the two states their partner has.
6.    Regions 1 and 4 will remain stationary for a period of 5 minutes while station 2 rotates to 1 and 3 rotates to 4.
7.    Teacher will assign each student with a number from 1-6 in each station depending on the number of students in the class.
8.    Students will pair up with their matching number they were assigned and write down the name of the two states their partner has.
9.    Teacher will assign each student with a number from 1-6 in each station depending on the number of students in the class.
10.         Students will pair up with their matching number they were assigned and write down the name of the two states their partner has.
11.         Regions 1 and 3 will remain stationary for a period of 5 minutes while station 2 rotates to 3 and 4 rotates to 1.
12.         Students will pair up with their matching number they were assigned and write down the name of the two states their partner has.
13.         At the end of the three rotations each student should have collected 6 states, they will add these states to their originally assigned states for a total of eight states.
14.         Using a computer the student will sign on to Kido’z Internet browser and search for the following eight state facts: state flag, state flower/tree, and state bird.
15.         Students will gather information/pictures about the states they researched and create a poster identifying the state facts they learned about.
16.         Students will reflect on their learning process and answer the reflection questions on their board.
Web 2.0 Tool – Kido’z Internet browser - http://kidoz.net
Social Participation/Social Learning – Students will meet with their corresponding number partner in each region station. The student will rotate through the remaining stations and collect the state name that their corresponding partner began the activity with. By the end of the rotation each student will have collected six more states, giving them a total of eight states to research.
Making Connections – Students have been learning about their state. This lesson is an extension activity to allow students to explore and learn about other states independently and in a group to compare information. This lesson is a pre-cursor to students learning all of the states and their capitals.
Create/Produce – Students will create a poster showing the information they learned about each of the eight states they collected on their journey. Each poster will contain state facts and pictures the students researched and collected using the Kido’z Internet browser.
Reflection – A reflection piece will be built into this activity, where students will need to include a reflection piece on their poster answering the following questions:
1.    What did you learn by doing this activity?
2.    Now that you have completed the activity how will you learn about the remaining 42 states?

Here is my persuasive video that I created using a great web 2.0 tool called GoAnimate and Kido'z. I used GoAnimate to create the cartoon effect in the movie and I edited and added the remaining animations using the iMovie application. If you want further information about any of these web 2.0 tools visit their respective websites.
